The reason we do what we do here at Obilab is without a doubt because of the fine people we get to meet along the way. Obilab project is about building a community around equal and open access to music and musical instruments. We're constantly meeting incredible musicians who shine inside and out.
Recently, we got to sit down and talk with a new friend, an outrageously talented and totally lovely profesional drummer and pick his brain about making beats, changing the face of music, and our cardboard drumkit innovation.
Hey, what should we call you? -Jankely
And what's your super power? -My super power is that I can pay the rent by just making concerts in Barcelona
So Jankely, do you play in a band? If so, which? -Yes, I'm blessed to be a part of many bands which range from Jazz to Latin American styles. Passing through reggae, fusion, funky and many more.
When did you begin drumming and why? -I think at the age of 12 or so and it was an accident. I thought I could play the drums before I played for first time and I just had fun.
What motivates you to keep drumming and practicing? -Personal growth. My goal is to have no limits or restrictions when I want to play what's on my mind
What practical advice do you have to people just starting to play? -Listen to drums but most importantly is to hear the music and the other musicians. Stay relaxed, have a dialogue and enjoy.
Craziest drumming experience? -I was playing in a festival in France but I didn't have my drums with me and I had to borrow a shitty one. It was so windy that the drums where moving off of the stage... literally.
Hopes for your music and other music in the future? -These days the "musician" is more important than the music itself. I think people pay to see a face most of the time and music is in second place. And I hope they stop putting music in supermarkets, malls and shops. Most of the people hear music but they don't listen to it.
Are you a tech geek? If so, give us some of your must have equipment. -More than tech I'm a geek of sound. I always wear a drum key, even for opening a beer
Drumming inspirations, favorite bands? -TONY WILLIAMS
What were your first impressions of Obilab cardboard drums? -"Man, the snareeeeeee"
Did you have fun playing the drumkit? -Of course I had fun and my friends too.
Where would you like to take Obilab cardboard drums if you could go anywhere? -For sure if I'm going on tour I'll take them so I can practice at the hotel. And to the park could be an option, I'm a fan of green.
Where do Obilab drums fit into your drumming world? -It's a useful tool for practicing at home.
What changes would you like to see in Obilab for future drumkit models? -Maybe the bass drum could sound louder.
What's the next instrument you think Obilab should renovate and innovate? -Drums are okay!
