When Patrick, lead designer at Obilab, created his set of portable drums, every detail was considered an opportunity to engineer something whose ingenuity is only rivaled by its functionality. In Obilab’s drumkit, intelligence is made audible in each and every beat, all thanks to their unique choice of materials.
What are we workin’ with?
Cardboard + fiberglass + a little bit of rice in the snare head and charleston + a whole lot of love
Why Cardboard and Fiberglass?
The combination of cardboard and fiberglass is a potent one. The corrugated cardboard, making up the majority of the set, is extremely flexible because of it’s layers upon layers of interwoven paper pulp. And Obilab studied the most commonly played drum areas and fitted a sheet of netted fiberglass on top. The cardboard with fiberglass reinforcement means these drums will last longer than traditional drums skins. Hit them all you’d like, these bad boys ain’t going nowhere.
Because of the simplicity and availability, cardboard and fiberglass can be purchased at a price that ensures the drum set is totally affordable for everyone. Unlike traditional drum kits which are almost always a huge financial burden, Obilab makes the dream of owning your own drumset possible for you and your bank account.
Sound quality and quantity
Obilab drum kit solved the all-important two-part juxtaposition of drums--create something that sounds good, but doesn’t sound too loud. The layers of corrugated cardboard generate a very audible immediate noise while simultaneously absorbing excess sound. Both your neighbors and your eardrums will thank you for keeping the decimal level at a low range. But the drums are still loud and clear enough to be played beside other acoustic instruments.
This drum kit has been engineered with creativity and precision to contain a surprisingly giant range of sounds and experiences. The snare has a true rat-a-tat-tat, the high hat its own sharp trill, the toms their own scale of varying deepnesses, etc. Exploring the drum kit’s sounds is half the fun.
Light as a feather
All together, Obilab drum kit weighs less than 5 pounds keeping the dream of being a drummer on the move alive. Every last piece is made to be weight efficient, down to the BOSO’s bamboo drumsticks which sound especially beautiful on the kit and lend to the eco-smart, light design.
Big things come in small packages
Obilab drums disassemble and are stored within themselves, inside a square backpack roughly the size of a small carry-on suitcase (55 x 32 x 22 cm to be exact). Store them under your bed, in the closet or cupboard, or leave them assembled and show ‘em off to all your friends. Assembled or disassembled, this drum set occupies a fraction of the space of traditional or electronic drums.
Quick and easy assembly
No extra keys or tools required. Obilab drumkit is an all in one experience. The cardboard and fiberglass fit within themselves, are adjustable and customizable, and take less than 5 minutes (around 2 minutes with a bit of practice) to assemble and disassemble.
Facilitate local production
Cardboard and fiberglass are some of the most common materials on the planet. This drum set can be manufactured locally in literally any part of the world. Patrick saw this as an opportunity to cut down on the eco-waste of shipping transportation as well as create local jobs and culture in whatever site chooses to manufacture Obilab.
